Richard Burrows is director of arts education at Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). He has served in this capacity for nine years, since the inception of the LAUSD 10-Year Arts Education Plan. He was hired as the conceptual architect and organizational strategist for implementing a multiyear effort to reinstate dance, music, theater, and visual arts instruction for all students, at all grade levels, in all schools, in all four art forms by 2010. Prior to joining LAUSD, Mr. Burrows was executive director and president of the board of the Institute for Arts Education in San Diego where he implemented aesthetic education programs in 39 school districts in San Diego County. He was formerly a tenured professor of dance and choreography at The Ohio State University and an international touring artist with the Repertory Dance Theatre for many years. He is a national and international consultant in arts and arts education and has assisted the cities of San Diego, Los Angeles, West Palm Beach, Chicago, and countless others in developing comprehensive plans for community arts engagement. He was the consultant for the development of the Model Arts Program Network with the California Department of Education and is currently a California delegate of the national CCSSO/SCASS Arts Assessment projects.
