Myran Parker-Brass, a native of Chicago, Illinois, is a professional musician, music educator, and administrator, with over thirty years experience providing access to quality arts education for schools, families and the broader community. In 2011, Myran joined the Boston Public Schools (BPS) as Executive Director for the Arts providing strategic vision/planning and building capacity to deepen arts education with a focus on access, equity and quality for all students. Before joining BPS Myran was the Director of Education for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) for twenty years, building and supporting arts education for all Massachusetts communities. Myran was the first Chair of the Experiential Education Program at Longy School of Music, creating and implementing the graduate program which trains Longy students to be teaching artists. Myran currently serves on the Arts Education Advisory Council for the Massachusetts Department of Education, the Board of Overseers for the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Board of Directors for the Boston Children’s Chorus, Roxbury Community College Foundation, and Project STEP (String Training Program for Minority Students). Myran continues work as a professional musician, performing in the United States, Europe and South America. Myran has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra which the Boston Globe praised as ..“just plain wonderful”. Her jazz performances earned her the “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” award at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. Myran is co-founder of the New England Spiritual Ensemble (NESE), dedicated to the preservation and performance of the Negro Spirituals.
