Home Mender
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Monica and her crew traversed the country gathering discarded refuse and recycled material to create Home Mender - a cacophony of color, texture and movement. Through this surreal installation, the viewer was transported from the “Pent House” of an old Police Evidence Warehouse to a dreamlike world. This once liminal zone was transformed into a wonderland of creativity, community and commonality. Over the course of four months, Home Mender was a unique venue for small pop up performances by touring music groups and was also included in Lumen8 Anacostia, an ArtsPlace project. Imbued with a warm handmade aesthetic, this site-specific installation brought new life to Anacostia. Home Mender was commissioned by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) as a part of the spring 2012 5x5 temporary public art project. 5x5 resulted in twenty-five groundbreaking temporary public art installations that were installed concurrently throughout Washington, DC. The projects activated and enlivened publicly accessible spaces and added an ephemeral layer of creativity and artistic expression to neighborhoods across the District of Columbia.
