Rep. Rick Lazio (R-NY)

Congressional Arts Leadership
1997

Congressman Rick Lazio, representing the Second Congressional District in Suffolk County, New York, since 1992, has been an outspoken supporter on behalf of the arts. During the last Congress, he played a key leadership role in championing the National Endowment for the Arts. He worked tirelessly to gain the support of his colleagues and led the pressure upon House leadership to appropriate funds for the agency.

One of his best recognized accomplishments on bahalf of the National Endowment for the Arts was to spearhead a letter to House Speaker Newt Gingrich endorsed by 29 of his peers, which called for a commitment to public arts support. As he has stated himself, both bi-partisan and moderate support is critical to the advancement of favorable federal arts policies, and he has contributed heavily to strengthening both. Congressman Lazio has also served as a leader in helping seniors, providing affordable housing for all Americans, fighting against breast cancer, and a variety of other legislative issues. A graduate of Vassar College and American University, where he received a law degree, Mr. Lazio is a former prosecutor with the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
