Effective Nonprofit Advocacy

This study describes the factors that make nonprofit organizations effective advocates in national public policy debates. It profiles twelve organizations that were rated most influential on selected issues in a survey of Congress and officials from the Clinton Administration. In addition to describing the lobbying and communications techniques they use, the study delves into questions of strategy, the role of public opinion, and the types of rhetorical arguments considered most valuable. The author found a commonality in the organizations that were effective advocates. They paid careful consideration to developing their messages, used+E6477bsp;savvy legislative lobbying techniques, and developed an organizational infrastructure to facilitate lobbying.
