Modern Societies in Crisis
Saturday, October 25, 2014 - 12:00am
University of New MexicoEvent Description
"Modern Societies in Crisis: Global Challenges and Solutions" is the theme of the Fall 2014 Lecture Series organized by the International Studies Institute, at UNM (October 20-27, 2014).
During the last five years, the world has witnessed unprecedented upheavals, especially in the Middle East, that have pitted the principles of democracy, multiculturalism and respect for human dignity against often intransigent political and religious positions. Concurrently, the economic crisis affecting several countries within the European Union has caused increased levels of unrest that test the governing principles of democracy, social welfare, and human rights. The aim of this Lecture Series is to address the present crisis of modernity, examining not only problems but also solutions to this crisis. Examples will range from the local to the multinational levels, comparing developments within the European Union with developments in the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. This week-long lecture series, which will be free and open to the public, will enhance the community's understanding of current political and economic upheavals and their effects on New Mexico and the Southwest.
