Painting the Divine

Wednesday, October 8, 2014 - 12:00am

New Mexico History Museum
Event Description

The New Mexico History Museum seeks support for a public symposium in conjunction with its forthcoming exhibition, Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World opening June 28th 2014. The symposium will explore how Spanish colonial society in South America, Mexico and New Mexico viewed and read painted images of Mary. We will address how eventually many images of the highest artistic value produced in Mexico?s vice regal metropolitan center traveled up the Camino Real de Tierra Adrento to New Mexico where they served as "academic" prototypes for local 18th-century artists. Finally, we will discuss how many contemporary New Mexican santeros perpetuate the legacy of their 16th- to early 18th-century predecessors and how Marian images continue to inspire and influence artists today. Her image continues to be a source of pride and identity for many New Mexican Hispanics. The symposium will foster an international dialogue between scholars who will contribute their knowledge about representations of Mary found in the Americas and New Mexico and how her image united a wide geographical and cultural range of people in colonial America. This broad theme will allow for a variety of specialized papers to be presented by 8 participating scholars.
