Maud Lyon led the formation of the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan in 2007. It is a professional organization of arts and culture non-profit organizations in seven counties with 117 member organizations, from grassroots performing arts ensembles to major, national cultural attractions. The mission of the Cultural Alliance is to help its members to thrive and to be sustainable community assets, which is achieved through professional development programs, quarterly membership meetings, organizing collaborations, advocacy and marketing. One of the key goals is to increase individual philanthropy for arts and culture. In 2009, thanks to the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, the Cultural Alliance helped 75 of its member organizations to raise $4.92 million through an innovative on-line challenge program. The Cultural Alliance has also sponsored workshops to help members improve their capacity to attract and retain donors.
Maud has been a leader of Detroit’s nonprofit community since 1990, first as Director of the Detroit Historical Museum and then as the Executive Director of Detroit 300, the celebration of the City of Detroit’s 300th Birthday in 2001, a regional effort that involved more than 3,000 businesses and nonprofits. Its legacy projects include the creation of the International Monument to the Underground Railroad and Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit. In 2002-03 she served the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as Senior Vice President for Community Relations. Her diverse background in both government and private sector and her extensive civic involvement is a critical component of the success of the Cultural Alliance.
