Topic: Public Funding for the Arts: Regional Funding
In addition to state and local arts agencies, regional arts organizations serve their respective geographical areas with programs, services, and funding. Regional arts programs first emerged in the late 1960s in response to a need for greater arts access in areas isolated from major cultural centers. In the early 1970s and with federal encouragement, regional organizations were formed. Regional agencies are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts based on various formulas relating to the number of states in each region and historical data concerning support for performing arts touring. Regional agencies provide support to arts organizations, artists, and communities through a wide range of regional, multiregional, national, and international funding programs.
