Topic: Creativity and Innovation: Participation

Participation in the arts strengthens communities by encouraging community involvement, fostering civic engagement, and enhancing quality of life. Increasingly, arts organizations are interested in learning how to and build participation and develop audiences. Traditionally, art organizations sought simply to grow. However, other strategies for boosting arts participation are becoming increasingly important, namely, diversifying the audience base to bring in new participants and intensifying the participation level of existing arts participants.

Much research has sought to define the characteristics of participation in the arts and culture. Patterns of cultural participation are marked by a number of variables, including personal motivations, individual background characteristics, community factors, and venue location.

The National Endowment for the Arts conducts the most comprehensive research on arts participation in America.
