Convening Locally for Action State-wide
How can emerging leaders build a sustainable state-wide network that will shape arts and cultural policy, provide a forum for leadership discussions and offer tangible peer to peer networking opportunities? What can an Emerging Leaders Council do to enliven and cultivate Michigan’s arts and cultural future?
This preliminary discussion in Detroit will kick off a series of regional conversations that will take place across the state monthly. The feedback gathered at these meetings will ultimately provide the groundwork for founding a state-wide Emerging Leaders Council. Come to your local gathering to contribute ideas.
Our focus is on emerging leaders in the arts and cultural sectors, but we welcome anyone interested in exploring, envisioning and trailblazing new terrain for emerging leaders.

Creating a Hybrid Model for the Cultural Industry
A panel discussion that will look at the continuous struggle for funding and fundraising for arts organizations, and what can be done in a new and innovative way to succeed beyond the current realm. Especially at a time when market failure is even more evident, now is the time for artists and arts organizations to consider methods and strategies that will push them towards a hybrid business model and loosen the grip of the status quo.

Your Vote & The Arts Panel Discussion What are the current policy issues affecting artists and arts organizations? This conversation will begin as a 'wide-lens' approach towards advocacy, including how public policy intersects with the arts in various ways and how an individual can make a difference in what seems to be a confusing and difficult process. Then, the conversation will focus on each individual panelist's area of expertise involving those issues pertinent to his or her industry and organization. Tax code, online copyright protection, FCC regulations, and deductable contributions are just a few of the topics we will explore with our esteemed panel of experts in government relations and the arts. Join us for a discussion on this topic as we approach the 2008 election and learn how your vote might affect the arts! Panelists Daniel Gallant, Executive Director, Nuyorican Poets Cafe Gilbert S. Engaging the Next Generation of Leaders: A Conversation With Ben Cameron
The arts and cultural sector is in the midst of a critical time of transition as a generation of leaders, many of whom shaped the cultural landscape as we know it today, are preparing to step down and a new generation is stepping forward to take the reins. These emerging leaders, both professional and volunteer, want to be more than just stewards of the organizations built by those before them. They want to bring their own vision to arts and cultural organizations, and to help those organizations evolve and grow.
Ben Cameron, a former theatre professional, frequent public speaker, arts activist, and Program Director for the Arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in New York will speak about the shift of leadership in our field and how to engage the next generation of leaders as they prepare to reinvent and reshape the arts and cultural landscape.

What does an Arts Neighborhood Look Like to You?
There's a lot of buzz about arts neighborhoods. Across the nation people are clamoring to live in them, cities are pushing to develop and protect them. The City of Seattle itself is currently looking at making it easier for art spaces to survive and be developed in the dense urban core. They're thinking about incentives for developers who create these spaces or giving breaks to existing spaces to encourage thriving arts neighborhoods. But what exactly does this mean in Seattle? How are we unique and how will this affect or be informed by emerging or marginalized cultural forms? What kinds of spaces or activities should qualify? Join in an interactive, informal discussion with your peers exploring the nuances of local arts and the places they thrive.
