Tour: Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art
On the bus, docents gave an overview historical introduction to Cheekwook Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, one of Nashville’s treasures, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Upon arrival, the group participated in docent-led tour of these areas:
- The Carell Woodland Sculpture Trail, where contemporary sculpture by internationally recognized artists is integrated into reclaimed woodland. The secluded mile-long trail includes sixteen pieces of contemporary artworks, including works by James Turrell, Mel Chin, Doug Hollis and Jenny Holzer.
- Over fifty-five acres of gardens, some of which were recently redesigned by landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh.
- Contemporary Galleries, housed in the estate’s former horse stalls, provide a place for new art forms using various technologies including photography, film and video, computer graphics and audio recording.
- Terrific Treehouses, a series of ten temporary installations of artist- and architect-designed tree houses.
