This panel examined three of the nation’s newest, and most publicly visible, memorials.

Betty Chen’s presentation focused on the process behind the World Trade Center Site Memorial. Topics include: research, mission statement and program development, the jury and the competition, context, design team formation, public involvement, sustainable design goals, and the design/construction process. Participants will have the opportunity to comment and ask questions.

Jennifer Spangler discussed several themes related to the Oklahoma City National Memorial including family and community participation in design selection and examine the mission of the memorial to symbolize loss and historical commemoration. Finally, she will assess whether the completed memorial form achieved its mission.

The Pentagon Memorial started as an invitation to the world for ideas, initiated by the family members of those who lost their lives at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Their participation from the very first discussions has been unwavering, and they continue to be the driving force behind all of the Memorial efforts. Jerry R. Shiplett, Julie Beckman, and Keith Kaseman discussed the process behind the Design Competition, as well as the unique collaborative efforts of the dedicated parties and individuals who will ensure that the Pentagon Memorial is built with the utmost care and quality.
