Conclusions
Establishing the initiative outlined in this report is indeed a substantial undertaking. It comes as no surprise that past efforts have failed and good intentions have remained simply that. These recommendations are intended as a departure point for further discussion. We acknowledge it is likely that efforts will start up more slowly with selected initiatives. Toward that end the ideas put forward here are a menu from which to choose.
The survey results demonstrate the high level of interest in a wide array of services. However, the ability to pay does not match the level of desired service. At the outset a substantial amount of volunteer effort will be required to mobilize support. Substantial support through a start-up grant, commitment from a host and underwriting of specialized services will be required so support the group. It is important to underscore the diversity of the membership is a real plus for attracting a host and support. This same breadth is also essential for developing a vibrant discussion and stimulating new ideas and initiatives.
Action Taken at the Convention in Denver
The results of the study and the recommendations put forward in this report were presented at the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in Denver. The public art interest group met twice following the presentation to discuss next steps. There were at least 30 people who participated in each lively discussion. The following points were agreed upon by the group:
- Approach Americans for the Arts with a proposal to be the host organization, offering them first refusal.
- The proposal will identify the following needs for the organization:
- a dedicated staff person
- office space and other in-kind services to be determined
- a name and identity
- the separate policy making/governance structure under the umbrella of Americans for the Arts
- a flexible membership structure to attract the broad base of people involved in public art - The working name for the organization is Public Art Network.
- The current Steering Committee will be expanded to improve geographical and professional representation, specifically from a smaller community, a state arts agency, artists, architects or other designers.
- This steering committee will meet over the summer to formulate the proposal and forward it to Americans for the Arts.
- Plans for disseminating this report are underway. Hopefully it will be put on the McGregor Consulting site, currently in formation, or Americans for the Arts site.
