Composer Jimmy López will make his operatic debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago this winter, largely thanks to the decision to upload his vocal music onto YouTube. After an extensive quest for a composer to musically adapt Ann Patchett’s novel Bel Canto to the operatic stage, Lyric Opera came across Lopez’s samples on YouTube and immediately contacted him.
A renowned composer whose works have been performed by some of the leading orchestras in the world, López uploaded his music onto YouTube following the advice of a colleague informed of the new project. Five years later, López and the rest of the staff, including superstar soprano Renée Fleming as Creative Consultant, are putting the final touches on the modern opera.
The opera follows the story of the 1996 hostage crisis in Lima, Peru— coincidentally López’s hometown— and will run December 2015-January 2016.
