The Michigan Film Office announced that it is re-branding as the Michigan Film & Digital Media Office.

In July, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed House Bill 4122 into law and ended the state's film incentives program; the governor also decreased the office's current fiscal year budget from $50 million to $25 million—with $19 million already claimed for a state-owed debt. Having been established as a film office  since 1979, the new Michigan Film & Digital Media Office believes its name change will better reflect its expanded portfolio in growing Michigan’s creative media industry. The office “will focus more on talent development, finding new private financing sources, and tracking the number of jobs created and companies served.”

Commissioner Jenell Leonard noted that she hopes that “the office can attract companies that work in social media, gaming, digital and mobile media, animation and computer-generated imagery, or CGI, to do business in Michigan.” Leonard also said that they are especially interested in delving into talent development—particularly with Millenials—to foster future creative workers by helping colleges and universities in Michigan prepare students for jobs in creative industries.
