Earlier this year, Texans for the Arts successfully executed the legislative strategy that secured a new appropriation of $5 million from the 84th Texas Legislative Session for the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA), with support from and in partnership with the Texas Cultural Trust. The new funding was dedicated to TCA’s Cultural and Fine Arts Districts program, Arts Respond Cultural District Project, for the 2016-2017 biennium.

On December 9, 2015, TCA announced the 20 recipients of the inaugural Arts Respond Cultural District Project grants for fiscal year 2016. The grants total $1.5 million and will go to arts nonprofits and local government agencies in 11 different cultural districts located in Dallas, El Paso, Galveston, Houston, Lubbock, San Elizario, and Wimberley. The grants were awarded to arts organizations in designated cultural districts for projects that focus on significant cultural tourism efforts through such activities as marketing, infrastructure, and major events. The remainder of the funding will be distributed through the grant program for the second year of the biennium.
