According to Arts and Economic Prosperity 5, the latest economic impact study by Americans for the Arts, nonprofit arts and culture organizations in the San Jose area generated $191 million in economic activity in 2015. This is an increase of nearly 50 percent from $122 million in 2010, when the survey was last conducted.

Americans for the Arts partnered with the San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs to collect the local data, which showed excellent growth despite the recent loss of two major arts organizations from the area. Still, San Jose was outpaced in nonprofit arts spending by fellow California cities San Francisco and San Diego. Most residents see this gap as a plus, however: it means that there’s plenty of room for growth in San Jose before the next study in 2020.
