Public Leadership in the Arts Awards
Governors Arts Leadership Honoree
|Recipient:||Governor Robert Miller (D-NV)|
Governor Bob Miller became Governor of Nevada in 1989, and throughout his term in office he has been an active supporter and promoted of arts programming at every level. He is a leader in advocating a solid arts curriculum for our nation's public schools, regularly hosting student arts shows and concerts at the Governor's Mansion. He supported the restoration of historic buildings that are used to form a network of community cultural centers, and to encourage cultural tourism around the state. He is a strong advocate in promoting the value of the arts in building a strong economy and a better quality of life for all Nevadans.
In 1993, he was instrumental in creating the Department of Museums, Libraries and Arts, thereby insuring the cultural agencies of the state a cabinet-level profile, increased visibility and a unified voice. He has continued to recommend significant increases in the Nevada State Council on the Arts budget; he supported Art in Public Places legislation; and he has supported the inclusion of the arts as a core subject in Nevada 2000 Comprehensive State Improvement Plan. Drawing on the concept of a statewide cultural infrastructure, Governor Miller has led his state forward at a time when, in other states, sever cutbacks have been the norm.
