Americans for the Arts Presents National Award for Leadership in United Arts Fundraising to Marilyn Moosnick

Philadelphia, PA — June 20, 2008 — At its annual convention in Philadelphia, Americans for the Arts presented the 2008 Michael Newton Award to Marilyn Moosnick, an arts advocate in Lexington, Kentucky.  The Newton Award recognizes exemplary leadership skills and extraordinary dedication to supporting the arts through a united arts fund, which is a combined effort to raise money on behalf of multiple arts institutions in the community.

“Marilyn’s dedication and leadership in advancing the arts is outstanding and admirable,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “Her energy and commitment to fundraising has benefited thousands in Kentucky and nationwide.”

Moosnick was nominated by LexArts President and CEO James M. Clark.  A passionate arts supporter for four decades, Moosnick served as the first chair of Lexington Council of the Arts in 1972 and at the invitation of Nancy Hanks, served on the National Endowment for the Arts Expansion Arts Panel.  She continued to serve on the state arts council under five governors, including the last four of those 25 years, 1992-1996, as president of the council, by appointment of Governor Brereton Jones.  In 1997, she received the Hudson Milner Award for lifetime commitment to the arts, chief recognition among annual Governor’s Awards in the Arts.  Clark wrote of Moosnick, “She is the kind of volunteer who empowers and supports the artists, the arts administrators, and the cultural planners. She is a fighter, nurturer and visionary.”

LexArts is Greater Lexington’s premier cultural development, advocacy, and fund raising organization. Formed in July 1989 by the merger of the Lexington Council of the Arts (founded in 1972) and the Fund for the Arts (founded in 1984), LexArts services arts organizations, artists, and educational institutions throughout Lexington and Central Kentucky.

The Michael Newton Award is presented by the United Arts Fund Network of Americans for the Arts.
