Cloud
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Cloud was developed as part of Dixie College's Centennial dedication of its new library on campus. Christian Moeller's work, Cloud, was created in reference to how information recording and transmission, both personal and not, has gone from the written form or "analog" to digital and now to the "cloud". Moeller played on the literal meaning of the word cloud with the image of a desert cloud (St. George is in the desert southwest part of Utah) being formed by the spines of 11,000 hardbound books of 12 varying shades of custom dyed linen binding. These books are then offered to students and staff to check out for a time to keep as journals or sketchbooks with the agreement that the book will be checked back into the cloud and will become a record of the next 100 years for the College and the library. Journal keeping has a strong cultural tie to early as well as current Utah. Each book is stamped embossed with the title of the work and the number indicating color shade. Each is mapped on a grid to find. Every color set has back up copies to place in the cloud while the book is checked out.
