The Rise of the Creative Class
Author Richard Florida discusses theories in his book The Rise of the Creative Class in an interview with Fast Company. Florida explains his thoughts on the importance of creativity in business, communities, and local economies. “What I have said in my books—which has been my core message and the mission of my life—is to harness the creativity that lies deep within each human being. Progress will not happen without harnessing the third of us that work in the creative class: scientists, techies, artists, musicians, professionals, people working in medicine and education.” For information, www.fastcompany.com.

City Installs Art Displays in Vacant Storefronts
The downtown district in Dayton, OH is looking to boost its appeal and draw more businesses. As part of Activated Spaces, an initiative launched in January, vacant storefronts in the business district will now display artists' work on six-month rotations. Sherri Wierzba, business development manager for the Downtown Dayton Partnership, said “Activating the space for short-term use or even with creative displays is going to draw awareness from the public to these spaces that they might otherwise walk by or drive by without noticing.” For more information, www.daytondailynews.com.

Speaking from Experience
"Our success, which is our community’s success, is built on the understanding both in the corporate boardroom and in our neighborhood’s households that the arts and culture bring vibrancy and creates a ripple effect of benefits, even for those who don’t participate directly. Our research shows that this ripple effect creates two important kinds of benefits: it enhances the economic vitality of an area and it demonstrates how communities come together and understand each other." —Edgar L. Smith, Jr., BCA Executive Board Member and CEO of World Pac Paper Inc. speaks about the success of Cincinnati-based ArtsWave at Arts Advocacy Day
