Developing Mutually Beneficial Partnerships Between Arts and Business
What’s the best way to develop mutually beneficial partnerships so that both businesses and arts organizations feel fulfilled in their commitments to one another? Oftentimes, the key is communicating your goals to one another, as the 2013 BCA Survey of Business Support for the Arts names the lack of understanding and communication as a main reason why businesses choose to support other causes. Visit ARTSblog for tips on forging partnerships that work best for all involved.

BCA Executive Board Member Martha Ingram Talks Arts in Nashville
Martha Ingram, member of Americans for the Arts’ Business Committee for the Arts (BCA) Executive Board, is an outstanding businesswoman, philanthropist, and arts supporter, particularly in her beloved hometown of Nashville. Ingram spearheaded an eight-year campaign to build the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in downtown Nashville, as well as The Schermerhorn in the early 2000s, the current home of the Nashville Symphony. After the Symphony’s recent fall on hard times, Ingram provided the funds to save the facility from foreclosure. Ingram will hold an honorary seat on the host committee for the upcoming Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in Nashville this June. "The serious arts are alive and well [in Nashville], and the people are coming in droves now.”

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Shops for Success at Tony Walker & Co.
Seeking an innovative and fun way to engage new audiences and enhance your brand? The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Tony Walker & Co., a high-end retailer located in the Buffalo, NY region, have partnered on a new initiative to do just that. In May, TW&Co. hosted a BPO “Shop for Success Day,” during which any shopper who mentioned the BPO at TW&Co. received a 10 percent discount on his or her purchase. The company then donated 10 percent of the purchase proceeds to the BPO. In addition, TW&Co. generously hosted a “Shop for Success Day” reception to celebrate its growing relationship with the Philharmonic, with a fashion show featuring BPO musicians and staff. Banking on Business Support for the Arts
As part of the Arts & Business Council of Miami’s ArtsBiz, a series of conversations with corporate leaders in the region, Executive Director Laura Bruney recently spoke with Adolfo Henriques, the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust. Visit the ARTSblog to read the full interview.

“Through partnerships with arts organizations, businesses can leverage their employees' assets, experiences, and skills to develop an environment of creativity and improved morale. Additionally, by partnering with organizations, a business exposes its employees to new experiences and helps improve their quality of life. It’s a two way street, a win-win scenario for the business and for the organizations.”

Facts and Figures

Filling the Gap Between What Companies Offer and What Nonprofits Need
According to America’s Charities’ annual Snapshot report on employee engagement and corporate giving, roughly two-thirds of nonprofits surveyed believe their corporate partners and individual donors expect greater accountability around impact and measurable results and believe that operating in a digital culture requires them to be more transparent with donors and stakeholders. Half of the nonprofits surveyed say they have a strong relationship with their corporate and institutional partners, yet nearly 90 percent of respondents face significant challenges in sustaining these relationships. And while nearly half of the nonprofits have seen an increase in requests to engage with corporate employees, many meet these requests but are challenged to do so. Read more at Forbes.com.

Arts Sponsorship Spending is Just Slightly on the Rise, According to IEG
Sponsorship spending on symphony orchestras, performing arts venues, and other organizations is expected to grow just 1.4 percent in 2014, down from 2.6 percent from 2012 to 2013. Other interesting takeaways from IEG’s recently published report on arts sponsorship spending include:

  • Overall sponsorship spending on the arts is expected to total $927 million in 2014.
  • The financial services category continues to lead the pack in terms of number of deals—with Bank of America (a 2011 BCA 10 honoree) being the single most mentioned brand sponsor.
  • With the exception of associations and membership organizations (also at 1.4 percent growth), the year-over-year increase falls short of other sectors, including festivals, causes, entertainment, and sports
