Arts Mean Business—Conversations in Local Communities
East End Arts in Long Island, NY is hosting Americans for the Arts’ own Emily Peck as keynote speaker of the Arts Mean Business Forum on Thursday, September 20, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. at the Suffolk Theater. East End Arts invites business owners, artists, local government, arts organizations, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and community members to this arts and business forum with keynote presentation and panel discussion. Announcing The BCA 10 – 2012 Leadership Award
Chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young James S. Turley is the recipient of the 2012 BCA Leadership Award. Turley will be honored at The BCA 10 for his exceptional leadership in partnering with the arts, including his work with the National Corporate Theatre Fund and ensuring access to theater education through initiatives like Impact Creativity. ARTS Speak at the Republican and Democratic Conventions
In a creative partnership, arts were brought to the forefront of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions through policy forums. The Americans for the Arts Action Fund; The Recording Academy (GRAMMYs); NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants; and The United States Conference of Mayors co-sponsored arts programs at the political conventions. Marketing Director of the Tampa Bay Times Kerry O’Reilly, a 2012 BCA 10 Honoree, was a panelist at the RNC. Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Duke Energy James E. Call for Sessions for Americans for the Arts Annual Convention
Americans for the Arts invites you to submit a session proposal for the 2013 Annual Convention, June 14–16, 2013 in Pittsburgh, PA to continue the national conversation on the "new normal" and focus on how the arts can benefit communities undergoing demographic shifts.

The Annual Convention program will explore strategies for communities to adapt, transform, and revitalize in order to define and build “the 21st century American community.” Americans for the Arts is interested in proposals from a variety of sectors and welcomes sessions from both members and nonmembers. The deadline to submit a proposal is September 19!

If Miles Davis Taught Your Office to Improvise
With the current pace of change in the workplace, there is a demand for businesses to be ready for anything and everything. But how can business leaders prepare themselves for the unexpected? In a recent Fast Company article, Frank J. Barrett, professor of management and global public policy at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, suggests that business leaders take a cue from jazz musicians and practice improvisation. Corporate Foundation Growth in 2012
According to the Foundation Center, corporate foundation giving has seen a quicker recovery after the economic downturn than giving by independent and community foundations. In 2011, after adjustment for inflation, estimated giving in 2011 by approximately 2,700 corporate foundations grew by 2.8 percent. Fifty-three percent of corporate foundations expect their giving to increase in 2012. For information, www.thenonprofittimes.com.

Private Sector Network

Surveying Business Programs Nationwide
Responding organizations to the Americans for the Arts Private Sector Survey provided a total of $70.2 million in the form of grants or contracts to support arts organizations and/or individual artists during 2011. A total of 3,028 arts organizations and individual artists were supported by this funding. The annual survey asked 83 organizations with a business focus, including Arts & Business Councils, Business Committees for the Arts, Business Volunteers for the Arts, and United Arts Funds to answer questions regarding their programs.
