Peter Duffy heads the Master of Arts in Teaching program in theatre education at the University of South Carolina. He teaches courses in applied theatre, dramatic literature for youth, creative drama, methods of teaching drama, children’s theatre and co-facilitates arts-based research with pre-service teachers. He uses theatre engagements with schools as a means to activate student learning and within communities to create dialogue around issues of concern to them. Prior to USC, Peter was the Director of Education and Community Outreach at the Irondale Ensemble in Brooklyn, NY. While there he trained teaching artists and teachers in drama as pedagogy and performance assessments. He was a member of the New York City Arts Round Table and the Empire State Arts Partnerships. Additionally, Peter taught middle and high school English and drama for a decade in Maine and New Jersey. He has also worked as an actor/teacher in New York City schools. He is the author of several articles and book chapters and co-edited the book, Youth and Theatre of the Oppressed (Palgrave, 2010) and edited the forthcoming A Reflective Practitioner’s Guide to (mis)Adventures in Drama Education – or – What was I Thinking? (Intellect, June 2015). His newest book, Dramatic Improvements in Learning: How Neuroscience and the Arts Saved the Curriculum, is currently in development. He has spoken across the US and in ten countries about research into cognition, education and the arts.
