Heather Spooner, MA, ATR-BC
Heather Spooner, MA, ATR-BC, is an artist, art therapist and arts in health advocate with over 15 years’ experience in the field. Heather has incorporated art therapy and arts in health in a variety of settings including healthcare facilities, museums, communities, and a residential substance abuse center. Prior to joining the Center for Arts in Medicine, Heather taught art therapy at the undergraduate level and spearheaded the formation of a statewide arts in health organization, Arts for Health Florida. Heather joined the University of Florida in 2014 as a research scholar.
Heather’s research focuses on the delivery of telehealth-based creative arts therapy services. She is part of the clinical team that developed the Rural Veterans’ Telerehabilitation Initiative Creative Arts Therapy (RVTRI CAT) Project at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, which is the first telehealth-based creative arts therapy program to be funded by the VHA Office of Rural Health. This year RVTRI CAT has partnered with Creative Forces: The NEA Military Healing Arts Network to integrate telehealth within its network of creative arts therapy programs. In addition to her clinical practice, Heather is an instructor in the Center for Arts in Medicine’s graduate programs and a frequent presenter on topics related to art therapy and the arts in health.
