John Schratwieser
John Schratwieser joined Maryland Citizens for the Arts as Executive Director in June 2010. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the field of arts and nonprofit management. During his seven years at MCA, arts funding has grown nearly 60% from $13.2 million to $21 million for FY 2018.
From 2004-2010, John served as director of the Prince Theatre Foundation, now The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Historic Prince Theatre in Chestertown, MD. Producing, directing, performing and, of course, fund-raising, John envisioned and created a multi-discipline center for the arts to engage artists and residents of Maryland's upper eastern shore.
He also has previously worked in Development at Lincoln Center Theatre in New York and Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. And he spent several years in nonprofits ranging from NYC's Gay Men's Health Crisis to Children's National Medical Center in DC.
John received a B.A. from Fairfield University in 1991 and an M.P.A. from The George Washington University in 2005. John has also performed, as an actor and singer, for most of his life, rounding out his understanding of, and affinity for, arts organizations of all shapes and sizes.
In April 2017, after seven years as Director of MCA, John will be returning to the eastern shore where he will take on the leadership of the Kent County Arts Council and have the opportunity to launch a brand new initiative called ARTikultur-MD. ARTikultur- MD will be a new artist residency program and facility, the first of its kind in Maryland. It will serve as a space for Citizen Artists to create cross disciplinary works as arts based solutions for civic and social challenges.
