Marc Ian Tobias
Marc Ian Tobias is Americans for the Arts Vice President of Operations. As vice president, he is charged with strengthening and aligning central administrative and infrastructure functions with the organization’s core missions.
Marc provides leadership and strategic direction for all operational functions, and directly oversees a broad range of areas including human resources, performance management, contracting, office services, facilities management and all of the organizations meetings and events. He works to ensure that the organization has the most cutting-edge policies and procedures in place to help the staff advance the goals of the organization. Prior to this appointment in January 2004, he was director of meetings and events at Americans for the Arts for six years.
Marc's broad-based background in the nonprofit sector includes working with trade and membership associations, philanthropic organizations, and association management companies. Before joining Americans for the Arts in 1998, he was the manager of education programs with the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives (GWSAE). With GWSAE, he implemented professional development programs specifically designed for the nonprofit professional. He also served as membership coordinator with several associations managed by Smith, Bucklin and Associates, an association management company.
With over 25 years’ experience of working in the non-profit sector, Marc earned his CAE credential (Certified Association Executive) from the American Society of Association Executives in 2007. In 2003 he received his CMP designation (Certified Meeting Professional) from the Convention Industry Council. He is a graduate and proud alumni of The University of Maryland.
