Meet the Marketing and Communications Team
Steve Custer joined Americans for the Arts (AFTA) as Communications & Publications Manager in November 2017. He collaborates and guides all aspects of AFTA's communications—from assistance in determining, creating, and editing content, to setting and enforcing production schedules and determining delivery. Majoring in Theatre & English, he has a Bachelor's Degree from Frostburg State University, and has been performing in live theatre since he was 12 years old.
He's had the privilege of serving as the communications manager and editor for the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA), and most recently with the American Jail Association (AJA). AJA's bimonthly publication, American Jails magazine, received recognition two years in a row with Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX); and while working for AOPA, he created and project managed the Coalition of Compassionate Care—which directly resulted in 11 Boston Marathon bombing survivors receiving diagnosis, medical care, and artificial limb devices free of charge from AOPA's membership.
Steve is currently an ensemble company member of the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, and he takes flying trapeze classes in Washington D.C. with Trapeze School New York (TSNY). He also volunteers at the DC Metro Area hospitals visiting youth as Spider-man through the Hope for Henry Foundation.
