The word “Onward” sprawls across the field at the Health & Human Services Campus with 30´ letters comprised of landscape edging. The O rises from the ground. A planted line of native grasses winds in a pattern towards the edge of the site. The size of each arc is proportional to the population of Austin by decade since 1903. This was the first year that records were kept at the Office of Vital Record—an office located at the campus. The word “Onward” is meant to represent the spirit of the mission of the Health & Human Services Department. Ground viewers can only see a part of the whole at a time while the complete aerial view can be experienced by passengers flying into the nearby Austin airport.
