Description:
StreeTALK by Patricia McShane and Erik Adigard is a participatory installation composed of community comments and drawings on possible futures of Palo Alto. For three days, during the Code:ART public art festival, a downtown street corner was re-staged as a space for creative expression by residents, city officials, visitors, commuters, and students. Artists and project facilitators invited the public to participate in a conversation and contribute their ideas, concerns, and dreams to the interactive community wall by adding drawings, doodles, or colorful text stickers. The stickers of various shapes and colors designed by McShane and Adigard for the StreeTALK project prompted the public to share their input about their ideal city in six main categories: Regulate, Move, Beautify, Build, Play, and Trade. The ensuing responses became a meaningful conversation rooted in the intersection of thoughts, ideas, concerns and suggestions. The street corner turned into a lively universal agora. The final piece stood as an information tree and an unpredictable collective artwork in its own right. Although the three-day onsite installation was taken down at the conclusion of Code:ART, StreeTALK lives on as an online documentation project and includes an interactive website featuring a video clip highlighting a number of interviews with the project participants, a digital record detailing the development of the onsite project, its findings and take-aways.
