Leon Kuehner has been Executive Director of the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education since August of 2013. He joined the IAAE Executive Board in 1998.
From 1975-2010 he was a high school band director in Iowa. In addition to his duties with IAAE, he is currently teaching music at North Iowa Area College and is co-administrator of the “Iowa Model of Excellence” mentoring program for beginning fine arts teachers in the state.
He received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He previously had been president of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, the Iowa Chapter of the American School Band Directors Association, the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education. He has been awarded the Outstanding Music Educator Award for the state of Iowa, the Karl King Distinguished Service Award for both active and retired band directors in Iowa, and the National Citation of Merit for contributions to interscholastic music by the National Federation of High School Associations.
