In the Spring of 1994 the League of Historic American Theatres conducted a survey of historic theatres. The comprehensive 120 question survey was mailed to 496 current and former historic theatre members of the League. 140 surveys were returned. some highlights of the survey findings include: The public sector is a major source of support for the capital campaigns of historic theatres, both when cities fully finance the rehabilitation of theatres they own, and as a contribution to the campaigns of theatres owned and managed by nonprofit organizations.

A major controversy about the nature of modernity centers on the putative globalization of culture and on the social mechanisms through which this globalization may occur. One area in which this process is readily observable is the historic preservation of obsolete buildings as some form of collective heritage, a pervasive feature of the contemporary cultural landscape encountered to some extent in every modern society.
