The Value of the Arts

GENERAL

Research Abstract
The Value of the Arts

This booklet discusses the role of the arts in education, in civic life, in international affairs, in the economy, and of value in themselves. Throughout this paper we have presented data that substantiates the thesis that the arts are valuable and worthy of support. We have explored the utility of the arts: the way they contribute to our wealth and long-term economic growth; their special ability to create innovations and new environments which advance civilization; the wide variety of ways the arts stimulate learning; and their unique power for interactions with societies around the world and with the rich diversity of groups within this country. Yet we cannot forget that the most important value of the arts is in their very existence and being. Ars, gratia artis - art for the sake of art. (p.24-5).

Introduction.

In education:

The arts are a basic and central medium of human communication and understanding. Recent research points to a direct correlation between arts-based learning and enhanced student achievement. The arts stimulate learning and improve overall academic performance. There is a powerful relationship between knowledge of the arts and success in scientific endeavors. The arts teach important skills that prepare the whole person for college and later life. Arts education is increasingly valued as useful training for a business career.

In civic life:

American culture incorporates the heritage of many people and thereby provides a unique context for multicultural understanding. The arts provide new opportunities for economically disadvantaged individuals. A nation's cultural life is closely related to its freedom. In international affairs: The arts have an unparalleled ability to cross the national boundaries imposed by language and contrasting cultures. In helping to establish a peaceful and stable world, it is vitally important for this nation to become knowledgeable about foreign cultures. In today's global environment, the needs of business for international expertise and exchanges are greater than ever. The arts can be especially helpful to business in cross-cultural situations.

In the economy:

The arts are producers of intellectual capital which has an enormous monetary value. The capital value of the physical plants and holdings of organizations concerned with arts is enormous. The arts contribute to the innovative capacity of this nation. The commercial arts depend directly on the nonprofit fine arts for their research and development. An aesthetic dimension to design in products and graphics plays an increasingly important role in helping companies and countries meet their export, sales and marketing objectives. The arts have a direct economic impact, particularly in terms of increased tourism and improved downtown development.

The arts can contribute to changing a city's image. By contributing to the livability of cities, towns and villages, the arts help to attract investors. Artists themselves are being recognized as dynamic city builders.
