Americans for the Arts and The United States Conference of Mayors today awarded Maryland Governor Larry Hogan the 2018 National Award for State Arts Leadership. The award, along with three other arts leadership awards, was presented at The U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Winter Meeting in Washington, DC. 

Americans for the Arts and The United States Conference of Mayors today awarded Dallas Mayor Michael S. Rawlings the 2018 National Award for Local Arts Leadership for cities with a population of 100,000 or more.

Americans for the Arts and The United States Conference of Mayors today awarded Santa Fe Mayor Javier M. Gonzales the 2018 National Award for Local Arts Leadership for cities with a population fewer than 100,000.

Americans for the Arts and The United States Conference of Mayors today awarded two-time Tony Award-winning stage and screen actor and musician Michael Cerveris the 2018 Citizen Artist Award. The award is given to nationally renowned artists who have achieved both outstanding success in their creative professional fields, and have made significant charitable contributions of their time and resources to advance humanitarian and educational causes.  

Americans for the Arts announced today that Julie C. Muraco has been elected as Chair to its Board of Directors for a two-year term. Muraco replaces Abel López, associate producing director of GALA Hispanic Theatre, who served as Chair since 2013. Muraco becomes the first woman Chair of Americans for the Arts since the organization’s formation as a result of a merger in 1996.

Americans for the Arts today announced 26 new and re-elected advisory council members for each of their four networks: Arts Education, Emerging Leaders, Private Sector, and Public Art Network. These individuals will advise Americans for the Arts’ staff on developing programs and services that will build a deeper connection to the field and the network membership. 

Americans for the Arts and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) today presented the Public Leadership in the Arts Award for State Arts Leadership to Arkansas Senator Joyce Elliott. The award, presented at the NCSL Capitol Forum in San Diego, honors public officials who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the advancement of the arts at the state level. 

Americans for the Arts and ArtsMemphis will host the annual National Arts Marketing Project (NAMP) Conference in Memphis, Tennessee, November 10-13, 2017. The largest gathering of arts marketers in the country, the conference is a critical forum for arts groups to discuss the rapidly changing demographics and behaviors of U.S. consumers, as well as how arts and culture organizations can remain relevant in the era of consumer control. 

A new research study published by Americans for the Arts uses statistical data to quantify the scope and economic importance of the arts across America. Creative Industries: Business & Employment in the Arts in 2017 demonstrates that nationally, 673,656 businesses are involved in the creation or distribution of the arts, and they employ 3.48 million people. This represents 4.01 percent of all U.S. businesses and 2.04 percent of all U.S. employees. 

Americans for the Arts will present the annual National Arts Awards on Monday, October 23, as part of National Arts and Humanities Month. The awards recognize artists and arts leaders who exhibit exemplary national leadership and whose work demonstrates extraordinary achievement.
