New York, New York -- Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) is pleased to continue its Free Concert Series on Friday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm with the presentation of The Virtuosic Voice of the Violin. Led by BSM faculty member violinist Claudia Schaer, she is joined by pianists Helen Lin and Lan-In Winnie Yang. The program will be held at the David Greer Recital Hall at the school's home site located at 323 West 108th Street (off of Broadway) in Manhattan. Admission is FREE and seating is limited.
The concert features four works spanning the 19th through 21st centuries, each of which features the violin as a central voice, exploiting its sonority and versatility. Repertoire to be performed include composer Arvo Pärt's mystical Fratres, (1977/80) which exists in at least eighteen different instrumentations of which violin-piano is the first and most well-known, is based on a basic, repetitive and chant-like chiastic form, contrasting moments of profound stillness with frenzied rapturous energy. The pianist-composer Sergei Rachmaninov's romantic Deux Morceaux de Salon,(1893) is one of just a small handful of works he wrote for violin, and it pairs a classical romance with a stylized traditional Hungarian gypsy dance.
Composers Lan-In Winnie Yang and Andrew Thomas will be present for the performance of their works which were written for Claudia Schaer and the North/South Chamber Orchestra for the 2016-2017 season. These compositions will be receiving their violin-piano-transcription world premières, with Ms.Yang at the piano for her piece- Transformation (2016) which takes a spark-filled motif and transforms it through a wide range of expressive development. Composer Anthony Thomas' Premonitions (2017) weaves a gossamer thread over tango, bossa nova, mambo and rhumba rhythms.
