The Gallery at Center for Creative Education is pleased to present “Drawings for Sculpture” by artist Hubert Phipps, as one of the season’s premiere exhibitions. Located in a beautifully renovated building in the historic Northwood Village neighborhood of West Palm Beach, the exhibition program brings to the public a lively selection of works by artists who often demonstrate a different visual perspective that celebrates creativity in its many forms.
Hubert Phipps is a professional artist who will show an assortment of interrelated, hand-drawn and computer-generated images on paper, which initially are utilized as preliminary studies that connect to his three-dimensional works. Phipps creates drawings for a variety of sculptural works, following an honored custom that can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece and then later to the blueprint “cartoons” of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. As sculptural shapes became more sophisticated and artists began formal studio schooling as de rigueur, the idea of carefully planning ahead became a prerequisite, and before any attempt at laboriously carving out a huge granite block or the trunk of a tree or a bronze casting was attempted, exploratory sketching, most usually done with a charcoal stick on paper, were utilized in advance as an outline for a sound and well-thought out sculptural form.
In many cases, these preliminary studies by artists have become sought after by collectors, for example, the early black and white study drawings of sculptors Henry Moore, Tony Smith and Bernar Venet, and most recently the elaborate and often humorous site illustrations of Claes Oldenburg, whose outdoor sculpture, “Typewriter Eraser,” has just been donated to the nearby Norton Museum of Art for their new entranceway.
Hubert Phipps, who just completed a residency at the New York Studio School and will open a career survey of drawings and sculpture at the Coral Springs Museum of Art in 2019, follows a great Palm Beach tradition of artists in residence. Phipps comes from a family of prolific artists, including Palm Beach resident Susie Phipps Cochran and her relatives: her father, the late painter Michael Phipps, the late Diana Guest, second cousin, son Jay Cochran, grandson Rafe Cochran, who all participated in the “Art in the Family Tree” exhibition at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens last year. In addition, the county has been frequented by an annual variety of well-known artists, from Salvador Dali to Andy Warhol to Kenneth Noland, and Hudson River School painter Laura Woodward, one of only three inductees to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame who also were in residence here, is the subject of a survey show at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden galleries this season.
Phipps’ solo exhibition at the CCE will showcase about thirty working drawings intended for sculptural consideration, as well as a selection of small-scale pieces, some of which were originally derived from the drawings on the gallery walls. Phipps maintains a large working studio in Virginia, where he fabricates most of his artwork and sculptural forms produced by other bronze foundries that bring his drawings to life.

The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, February 9, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., with an artist’s talk on Saturday afternoon, February 10, at 2:00 p.m. and featuring commentary by the guest curator for the show, Bruce Helander. The exhibition continues through March 17; also on display, mezzotints by Craig McPherson.
