Special Screening of PBS Craft in America: Service

Thursday, November 6, 2014 - 6:30pm

Smithsonian American Art Museum - Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium
Event Description

Join us for a special screening of PBS Craft in America: Service, a Peabody Award-winning series, which continues to explore America’s creative spirit through the language and traditions of the handmade. The newest episode, "Service", part of the PBS veterans initiative Stories of Service*, is the story of craft and the military. From the origins of the Army Arts & Crafts Program and the G.I Bill to contemporary soldiers and veterans, "Service" documents the power of the handmade to inspire, motivate and heal.  The Craft in America: Service episode will air on local PBS stations beginning on November 2 - check your local listings.

Following the screening of "Service", special guests Brigadier General Nolen Bivens, Americans for the Arts President Robert Lynch, ceramic artist Judas Recendez, and Eugene Burks Jr., saddler and leathersmith of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, join in a discussion with Craft in America Director Carol Sauvion about their experience with crafts and the military.

Free and open to the public - tickets available at the museum 30 minutes prior to screening
