April Sullivan has a BFA in Art History from UT-Austin and has been working in the arts in Austin since 1996. She has been the Artworks Director at VSA Texas since 2002 and Curator of Access Gallery from 2009-2012. At VSA Texas, April launched Distinguished Artist Veterans in 2009 and has experience working with creative veterans in visual art, music, movement, and writing through this program. Her connection to the Veteran community includes being a Co-Chair of the Central Texas Veterans Services Coalition from 2015-18, a National Network Member of the National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military, a member of the Creative Forces Task Force, a co-host of KOOP Community Radio’s Boots on the Air program on 91.7 FM, and a Community Collaborator with the VA Central Texas Veterans Health Care System on the Mental Health Summit, Arts and Humanities Community Partnership and the Local Veterans Creative Arts Festival and curator for the 2019 Austin Veteran Arts Festival. She feels that the arts are a way to invite the public into the worldview of our military service men and women and their family members, to start bridging a gap of understanding and healing.
