Description:

IN:SITE, fostering site-sensitive temporary public art in Milwaukee since 2006, was invited to install art at 17th and Fond du Lac Avenue. This exploded into IN:SITE’s biggest and most cohesive installation along twenty blocks, in place from June 2013 through April 2014. The art and opening events made this prominent artery more attractive, acted as a catalyst for neighborhood development, increased transportation safety, and created cooperation between community partners. Nine local artists were involved. Three had roots in this neighborhood. For three others, it was their first plunge into public art. Mentoring emerging artists is a central IN:SITE function. Diverse installations included sculpture that responds to the history of an Underground Railroad site, quotes from Milwaukee’s “First Lady of the Black Press” who died at 102 in 2005, a functional sculptural greenhouse built from recycled materials, and oversized photo imagery of senior living community residents’ hands.
