Datagrove

Datagrove is a multimedia installation by San Francisco based artists Future Cities Lab (Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno). By harvesting trending Twitter feeds from its local environment, Datagrove performs as both a social media whispering wall and a new type of community hub. It renders typically invisible data streams into variable intensities of light and sound. The grove’s magenta fibers gently pulsate and respond to the proximity of visitors with quiet whispering sonic undulations. Datagrove was designed to create a mysterious and meditative space woven into the rich fabric of downtown San Jose’s SoFA Arts District. The installation appears nested within the beautiful California Theater Courtyard, a formerly gated space that was transformed into a publicly accessible gathering area for the duration of the installation, from September 12 – December 8, 2012.The concept of this work is innovative because it uses architecture to transform invisible and intangible data into something that is visible and reactionary. The top five trending twitter keywords, updated in real time, are mapped to the five glowing pods within the armature. As visitors approach Datagrove, the pods glow brighter. When visitors are within 4 feet of a pod, as determined by proximity sensors, one of the top 5 trending Twitter feeds for the local zip code is spoken. The installation thus reflects the interests of the local community at a particular moment in time. For example, when the San Jose Sharks were playing at the nearby arena, sports terms were common, and the day that Justin Bieber was performing nearby, versions of his name appeared in all five pods.
