White House Committee Announces Expansion of Turnaround Arts Program

Today, the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) will expand its successful Turnaround Arts initiative into five additional school districts, as the program continues to successfully help turn around low-performing schools, narrow the achievement gap, and increase student engagement through the arts.

New Digital Platform Launched for Children and Art Teachers

Creatubbles has announced the launch of a new platform, focused on connecting children around the world and nurturing their creativity.

It is the first purpose-built safe online space where children can share, discover, and interact with each others artwork in a meaningful way.

After creating and customising profiles, young artists can browse, share, Bubble (similar to a Like), and give feedback on each other’s work. For younger students, profiles are managed by an adult who must approve any comments received before the creator can see them.

Speaking today about the need for reauthorization of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act, Education Secretary Arne Duncan stated:

"I believe education cannot and should not be boiled down just to reading and math. I believe the arts and history, foreign languages, financial literacy, physical education, and after school enrichment are as important as advanced math and science classes. Those are essentials, not luxuries."

Last year, American Theatre Wing and Carnegie Mellon University announced the creation of the Excellence in Theatre Education Award. Nominations are now open for the inaugural recognition.

Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinto, Carnegie Mellon University alumna, made the announcement during the TONY® Awards broadcast on June 8, 2014. The award is the first new Tony since 2009.
