In January 2014, Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places debuted two new public art installations at PortMiami, Bhakti Baxter’s Coral Reef City and Jim Drain’s The Bollard Project, transforming the campus of PortMiami into an outdoor public sculpture. These works of art enrich one of America's busiest ports, welcome more than 4 million cruise vacationers each year and span the entire landscape of PortMiami, including seven cruise terminals and eighteen parking toll booths. Bhakti Baxter’s design for the toll collection booths references PortMiami’s unique position as a gateway to the tropics. Featuring eighteen unique compositions, the artist collaborated with Coral Morphologic, a Miami-based scientific art endeavor led by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay, to select enlarged macro photographs of corals that inhabit the waters in and around Miami. The rainbow of colors presented by these soft corals (zoanthids) reinforce the image of Miami as a vibrant, tropical, and coastal city and propagate the idea of Miami as the Coral Reef City. A documentary video on the creation of the work can be seen at http://www.miamidadepublicart.org/#object/4545. Envisioned by artist Jim Drain, The Bollard Project uses bright, expressive color combinations to transform the utilitarian function of over 1,000 bollards into a signature work of public art for PortMiami. The artist-designed bollards are thoughtfully arranged in color sequences and rigorous geometries that reference maritime flag signage. Viewed as a whole, the installation’s vibrant colors and rhythmic patterns recreate the celebratory ‘bon voyage’ moments experienced by all cruise passengers.
