Description:

This Memorial is a place of contemplation and commemoration honoring those who died on American Airlines Flight 587 on November 12, 2001. The flight was traveling from Queens, New York to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The memorial is a meditation on a theme of displacement and destination, of home and away. An arching wall, sits on an elevated base. The wall is composed of windows of varying size and shape and a single door acts as a threshold from one side of the platform to the other. The wall arcs from a minimum height of six feet at its lowest to a maximum height of eleven feet. Although uniform in its material composition, the south wall is finished to a smooth surface and the north side is left as a rougher stone. The holes in the wall look out towards the ocean and offer an unobstructed view of the water. The door is oriented towards the Dominican Republic as is the grid of the granite pavers on the platform's surface. An image of the Obelisk at El Malecon in Santo Domingo is inscribed in the ground and oriented towards the position of the sun at the time of crash in Belle Harbor. At approximately 9:16 am on November 12, annually, sunlight will pass through the door in the wall and align with the obelisk on the ground. The platform itself is elevated three feet from street level to provide a sense of privacy for reflection. Nine pear trees sit on the surface of the platform. A slightly elevated planter that contains yucca, and assorted annual flowers surrounds the perimeter. On the outside of the planter at the level of the street a grove of cedar trees provides a buffer between the memorial and the neighborhood that surrounds it.
