Research Abstract
Cultural Diversity and the Arts in America

This is part one of article in this book in cultural equity. With each day we note steady changes in the demographic pattern of the United States. Increasingly, the nature of these changes gives cause for concern and reflection on what actions now might help us adjust to the changing configuration that is the certain future of our country. The magnitude of the changing demographic pattern has meant that practically no aspect of our lives can remain untouched by it. In this picture, the arts also stand at a critical juncture. This chapter will sketch out some of the major implications of demographic change for the arts community and the barriers to constructive action that must be understood before we can hope to respond constructively to the new conditions. (p. 182-183)
