GENERAL

Research Abstract
Impact of Arts and Cultural organizations on the Economy and Education in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County

Purpose:
The purpose of this survey was 1) to measure the economic impact of arts and cultural activities in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and 2) to evaluate the contribution of arts/cultural groups to the county's educational activities. Specific topics covered:

The survey covered a number of special areas, including:

  • Amount of money generated and spent in Forsyth County by arts and cultural agencies.
  • Number of people coming to Forsyth County as workshop participants, guest teachers, artists, directors, etc.
  • Number of hotel days spent in Forsyth County relating to arts activities.
  • Number of independent artists and craftsmen working and living in Forsyth County.
  • Number of students and teachers reached by arts and cultural programs and the scope of those programs.
  • Total economic impact of arts and cultural related activities.
  • The number of suppliers of arts and cultural products and services and their arts and culture related budgets.

Conclusions:
Local economists estimate that expenditures by the Arts Council and its funded and associate members contribute more than $33 million to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County economy each year. The impact of other arts and cultural organizations raises that total to $38 million. In 1981, the Winston-Salem Journal conducted a survey which revealed that arts and cultural groups paid a total of about $7.4 million in wages to about 1,025 employees. In the current survey, conducted in the summer of 1984, total wages of $10,621,339 and a total of 1,843 employees were reported. The Journal's 1981 survey projected that the $7.4 million in arts and cultural salaries created an overall effect on the local economy of between $37 million and $52 million. Using the same methodology for the current survey, the overall effect of salaries ranges from $53 million to $74 million.

Performers, craftsmen, artists, parents of students and others from outside the county spent $854,000 in Winston-Salem. This total does not include visitors who come to town to attend performances, exhibitions, etc. Arts Council organizations conducted 644 educational events during 1983-84 which had a total student attendance of more than 105,000 inside schools. Student attendance at programs out of school was 141,000. A total of 545 events for teachers had attendance of 16,215. Resident arts students at local schools contribute more than $840,000 to the local economy based on expenditures of $100 per month per student.

There are 10 companies in Forsyth County which have at least 1,500 employees. Arts and cultural organizations, which have over 1,800 employees, would rank among the top 10 employers if they were considered one company. At the end of August there were 6,350 individuals unemployed in Forsyth County. If all people employed in arts and cultural activities were to become unemployed, the number of people unemployed would increase by 29 percent. (Executive summary, p. 1-2).
