This is a report of a symposium sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Society for the Arts in Healthcare (SAH) which convened on March 19-20, 2003. The symposium brought together 40 experts in medicine, the arts, social services, media, business and government to develop a strategic plan for advancing cultural programming in healthcare across the United States. Participants developed recommendations and policies for infusing the arts and humanities into healthcare. The recommendations will serve as guidelines for developing programs and structuring policy by the SAH, the NEA, and other organizations participating in the symposium as well as public and private organizations throughout the country.
