Description:

Blooms by Bruce Munro was a temporary light-based installation comprised of seven circular platforms placed in the Arizona Canal. Each platform was mounted with one hundred multi-colored fishing rods threaded with LED-lit optic fibers. The shape of each platform resembled a blooming flower that glimmered in the sunlight, and at night emitted a gentle glow like a bio-luminescent lily blossom. After visiting Scottsdale in 2013, Munro became captivated by the man-made canal system operated by public utility Salt River Project (SRP). He wanted his installation to highlight the vital function the canals perform for desert residents. Munro’s use of fishing rods was a reverse reference to the “catch and release” policy protecting the White Amur fish imported by SRP to inhabit and clean the canals as bottom feeders. In this way, Blooms served as a reminder of the eco-system within the canal and the role it plays for the public.

PROJECT LOCATION

Waterway/River
The Scottsdale Waterfront is a landscaped pedestrian and bicycle path along both sides of the Arizona Canal bordered by residencies and businesses. The location serves as a public gathering place, entertainment venue, a site for temporary public art installations, and home to the iconic Soleri Bridge and Plaza. The area also serves as a pedestrian link from Old Town Scottsdale south of the canal, to the modern Fashion Square Mall to the north.
